Day 3 Structural Adaptations Continued- "Build-A-Bird"
Materials: worksheet for each student (see below), play dough, interactive notebooks, pencils
Objectives: Students will:
identify 3 different bird beak shapes and how they help the birds survive
identify 3 different bird feet shapes and how they help the birds survive
construct a bird with adaptations to match its habitat
Begin this lesson by asking the students to get their foldables out from the previous lesson. Ask the students to raise their hands to share information about the animals we learned about previously and their adaptations. Explain that today we're going to continue our lesson on structural adaptations, this time focusing on birds. Most birds have common adaptations such as hollow bones and feathers to fly. Other structural adaptations vary, depending on their habitat and diet. Today we're going to look at bird beaks and how the shape of their beak helps them hunt and eat. Explain that the shape of a bird's beak and feet are structural adaptations. Put this page on your projector. Slide your cursor over each bird beak and call on students to read the description for each beak. Ask the students to choose 3 different beaks to illustrate and explain in their notebook (right side). Then, explain that bird feet also vary depending on its habitat. Put this site on your projector (scroll down to the feet section). Ask students to read the descriptions as you look at the feet on the board. Now, have the students choose 3 feet to describe and illustrate on the same page in notebook. Here comes the fun part!.... Pair off your students. Tell them that they are going to design their own bird with special attention on their bird's beak and feet. Pass out the written assignment below and read the directions together. First have the pair plan/design their bird on the left side of their notebook. Then, give each pair of students 2 cans of play dough and partners can build their own bird. The pair will then present their bird to the class. Here is the worksheet that I made to correlate with this assignment:
