Day 4 Camouflage Materials: 6 door foldable- pre-made or one piece of paper for each student to make the foldable, (depending on the level of your students), interactive notebook, and Animal Camouflage in the Ocean by Martha Rustad Objectives: Students will: define camouflage understand why camouflage is important complete a foldable to describe 5 animals that use camouflage and how they use it
We've learned a lot about structural adaptations so far and today we're going to continue with that theme by learning about camouflage. Tell the students that camouflage is a structural adaptation that helps an animal blend in its environment. It can help the animal hide as it hunts for food so it can attack its prey. Or, it can help the animal hide from its predator. Start with this 1 minute video that shows an octopus changing color and patterns multiple times to hide from a predator. (The video is amazing but have the full screen pulled up beforehand to avoid inappropriate comments made under the video.) Then read Animal Camouflage in the Ocean by Martha Rustad to the students. Read it once all the way through, then read again taking notes together about the animals in the book. Again, i would have the students write the notes in 3 columns on the right page of their interactive notebook. animal camouflage purpose jellyfish clear bodies sneak up on prey seahorse pink bumpy skin hide from predators octopus skin that changes color hide from predators (sharks) shrimp red&white bodies match the coral to hide from predators rays brown and yellow spots hide from predators flounder bumpy&brown skin hide from predators
This is another great lesson to include a foldable. Have each student complete a 6 door foldable to record the information discussed today. (Depending on the level of your students you might want to have the foldables pre-made and ready.) Follow this link for directions for the 6 door foldable, p. 11.
