Day 7 Behavioral Adaptations- Hibernation Materials: interactive notebook, pencils, Scholastic's Hibernation Level 2 book (numerous copies if available) Objectives: Students will: learn that hibernation is a behavioral adaptation define hibernation identify animals that hibernate identify why animals hibernate
Remind the students that yesterday we learned about migration, a type of behavioral adaptation. Today we are going to learn about another behavioral adaptation, hibernation. Ask the students what hibernation means? Why do they think some animals hibernate? Would you like to hibernate in the winter? (I would!) Then watch this short video by the University of Wyoming Extension about hibernation. Discuss after watching. Next, using your projector and camera, project the pages of the Scholastic book, Hibernation. It's a level 2 book, but is rich in information and the pictures are great. Have the students take turns reading the book out loud by following along on the projector. Then, discuss as a class why animals hibernate and list the animals that we read about. I've made an assessment that goes with Scholastic's Hibernation. If you have several copies of the book, put the students in groups to complete the assignment. Review the answers together, then glue on the right side of interactive notebook. On the left side, have each student independently write why they think hibernation is critical for survival for certain animals.
